I just got home from “Irish Pub” where I watched the beginning of the election coverage with an American friend, her boyfriend and another couple of Dutchies. It’s almost 3:30 am here – boy am I going to be sorry when Liam wakes up in under 4 hours, especially since I’ve had a couple. But it was good to go and share that initial nervousness when McCain was ahead (BTW, doesn’t he look like a toad who’s eyeing a particularly tasty fly? – I don’t watch TV much so I’d not noticed before) and be happy when it switched when the other states came in.
And we won the pub quiz – not due at all to the fact that we had the only two Americans (including me), but that my American friend’s boyfriend is a political junkie and knew most of the tough questions – thanks to him we only got two wrong (photo ID of Mondale and knowing Dukakis’ running mate – I was ashamed I couldn’t remember that because that was the first time I voted). So he took home the bottle of Kentucky whiskey. But it was funny to see all the Dutchies so into answering the pub quiz questions, getting most of them right and being so into the election. Truly an international experience – watching the US election with Dutch people in an Irish pub! But I’m going to bed with it 194-69, Ohio called for Obama and with a Democratic senate according to the CNN website, so I’m hopeful I’ll wake up to no really bad surprises. And yes, the laptop is coming upstairs for that early morning peek.
