A special event today, both for my friend BG, who graduated with a Masters, and for us, since Ivo’s parents came up to babysit Liam so we could go and be adults for the afternoon.
Here’s the happy bg, getting her degree signed by her advisors.
Graduation here is a little different than in North America. BG presented her work (which was optional), and then her advisors spoke about her and the process, then told her she was graduating cum laude and signed her degree and gave it to her. That’s it, over. It was very personal and informal. I’d been to one other graduation (other than Ivo’s PhD defense, which is different), and that one was for a small group of students in a public setting – there the advisors just spoke about the students and presented the degrees. But no robes, no pomp and circumstance (music or attitude) and no being lost in a crowd.
Afterwards we went out to have beverages and dinner. Quite a nice day.
Meanwhile, back at home, the grandparents were playing with Liam, taking him to the water park…
Giving him his bath…
And putting him to bed…
Then, Marijke started cleaning – she has trouble sitting still and she wanted to help us to have more time to spend with Liam, not worrying about the house. I think if my identity was more tied up in being a good housewife, I might have been upset, but since it’s really not, I’m grateful. So many thanks to Leo and Marijke for taking care of Liam and our house.
Yay bg!! 😀
And I hate to point out an obvious mistake but that toddler you have pictures of could not possibly be Liam, he is not that big yet. He couldn’t be, he was just born not very long ago. 😉
