Off to the medieval castle of Muider, the Muiderslot<\/a> (slot = castle) today. The occasion was a visit from our friend A, who’s staying with us a few days – she’s American but since she’s a flight attendant it’s easy for her to come visit. She arrived early in the morning and made her way down to Utrecht. After a quick nap for her, we headed off.<\/p>\n

While she was taking her nap, we played with Liam, who loves to go fast. He’ll have to be careful or he’ll get more tickets.<\/p>\n

And with the moat, complete with shark fins. There’s actually an info board inside to let kids know there weren’t really sharks in the moat.<\/p>\n

We took a tour of the inside, but no photos were allowed. We’d planned carefully and had Liam in the back carrier since we knew there’d be stairs, but the tour guide wouldn’t allow the carrier so we had to carry him and basically let him run around all the rooms. I’m not sure which is more dangerous for the stuff in the rooms – a difficult to control toddler just getting into this walking thing or a parent with a back carrier that could knock into stuff. In any case, the tour was interesting – very focused on what day to day life was like in the castle, as well as the origins of many Dutch sayings and proverbs. The tour was in English since the English speakers slightly outnumbered the Dutch speakers – it seemed we weren’t the only one taking visiting friends around.<\/p>\n
