The plaque by the cliff dwellings. Translated "In the chalk cliffs of the Geulemberg, there were in the past more rooms which served as cave dwellings. Some of the dwellings were in use until 1900 by quarry workers, industrious people who earned their bread by breaking marl rocks on the mountain. The livingroom was exceptionally austerely decorated. The walls and attic were sometimes whitened with chalk or coloured only with light blue. For rent, people paid 4¢ per month or 50¢ per year. Restoration of a few of the bigger dwellings took place in 1976." |
